OPEN POSITION: VETERINARY ASSISTANT

Position Overview

As a Veterinary Assistant, you will play a vital role in providing compassionate and high-quality care to animals. You will assist veterinarians and veterinary technicians in various tasks, ensuring the smooth operation of the veterinary clinic or hospital. This position requires a strong passion for animal welfare, excellent communication skills, and the ability to handle animals with care and empathy.

Responsibilities

Animal Care and Handling

  • Safely handle and restrain animals during examinations, treatments, and procedures.
  • Monitor and provide basic care for hospitalized animals, including feeding, walking, and maintaining cleanliness.
  • Administer medications and treatments under the supervision of veterinarians or technicians.
  • Assist in preparing animals for surgery and post-operative recovery.

Client Support

  • Greet and interact with clients, ensuring a welcoming and friendly environment.
  • Obtain and record accurate information about animals and their medical history.
  • Provide general information and education to clients about animal care, procedures, and medications.
  • Schedule appointments, answer phone calls, and assist with client inquiries.

Clinic Operations

  • Maintain cleanliness and organization of examination rooms, treatment areas, and surgical suites.
  • Clean and sterilize equipment and instruments to ensure a safe and sterile environment.
  • Assist in inventory management, restocking supplies, and ordering medications as needed.
  • Document and maintain accurate medical records and patient files.

Laboratory and Diagnostic Support

  • Collect and prepare samples for laboratory analysis, such as blood, urine, and fecal samples.
  • Perform basic laboratory tests, including microscopy and diagnostic imaging.
  • Assist veterinarians and technicians in radiography, ultrasound, and other diagnostic procedures.

Team Collaboration

  • Work collaboratively with veterinarians, technicians, and other support staff to provide exceptional patient care.
  • Communicate effectively with the team to ensure smooth workflow and efficient patient management.
  • Assist with training and mentoring new staff members and volunteers as necessary.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent; additional certification or education in veterinary assisting is a plus.
  • Previous experience in an animal care or veterinary environment is preferred.
  • Strong passion for animal welfare and empathy toward animals.
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to effectively interact with clients and team members.
  • Ability to handle and restrain animals safely and with compassion.
  • Basic knowledge of animal anatomy, common diseases, and medical terminology.
  • Proficiency in basic computer skills for record keeping and data entry.
  • Ability to multitask, prioritize, and work efficiently in a fast-paced environment.
  • Physical stamina to lift and carry animals, as well as stand, walk, and bend for extended periods.
